Mwinyi Girls’ Hostel

This hostel is not finished. It is under construction at Al Hassan Mwinyi Secondary School in Mkuranga District, and it is not accepting residents. Everything below describes a project in progress.

The school

Mwinyi is a large institution by the standards of the district, with a total population of around 2,340 students. Its size is part of the problem: a school that draws from a wide catchment necessarily draws students from far away, and ARF’s report records many of them walking five to ten kilometres daily.

The report describes the consequences the school has recorded — fatigue, insecurity on the route, poor attendance and lateness, dropout among girls, and limited opportunity for academic support outside lesson hours.

What is being built

African Reflections Foundation, in partnership with Build a Life Foundation, is constructing a girls’ hostel following the model established at the three completed sites. ARF reports the work at an advanced stage of completion.

The intention set out in the report is to provide safe accommodation for vulnerable female students, reduce the risks associated with long daily travel, improve concentration and academic performance, reduce dropout, and strengthen student welfare and protection more broadly.

What is not being claimed

The expected benefits described in ARF’s report are expectations. They are what the Foundation anticipates on the basis of three previous hostels, and they are reasonable — but they have not happened yet, and this page does not present them as results.

Two further things in the source report are withheld. One sentence describing the facility’s interim use is ambiguous enough that publishing it would risk misleading a reader, and it is held until ARF clarifies it. And the school’s reported pregnancy figures are given in the source as a range rather than a count, concerning identifiable minors at a named school; they are not republished.
